University of Georgia '83My background in both fine art and design combines a lifelong affinity for observational drawing, typically landscapes or figurative subjects in context. My work is informed by an appreciation for the monumental spaces, landmark vistas and historic milestones common to our local culture. This appreciation has fueled my interest in documenting the chronology of events, both personal and universal. Many pieces are based upon specific occurrences or significant locations experienced firsthand and frequently shared with family, friends and colleagues.
This recent body of work is an outgrowth of my passion for plein-air paintings of compelling settings and scenic vistas, captured during my travels. My appreciation for the natural environment began early and has evolved over the years as climate change, geopolitics, globalization and social media have impacted the world. My passion for capturing atmospheric light and natural settings has been continually nurtured and woven throughout the pieces reflecting the passage of time. My paintings and drawings are intended to record the evolution of natural, cultural and socio-economic boundaries framed by vivid experiences and extraordinary settings that have enriched my life.
These recent landscapes are the first return to oil painting in many years and were inspired by a decade’s long friendship with George Sorrels, a former professor. His rigor, exacting style and great humor balanced with his passion for making beautiful pictures instilled in me a deep appreciation of process. That sense has never dissipated during my thirty year career as a commercial interior designer as I’ve sought to balance that pursuit with my continuing development as an artist. George was recently honored with inclusion in the Smithsonian Institution’s Artist Registry and since being included as a part of that archival process, I have rekindled my interest in painting.
